The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers (Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals) has issued an important update regarding the Sodium Tripolyphosphate (Quality Control) Order, 2020. This amendment was officially published on 11th March 2025, and it extends the implementation date of the order. 

What is Sodium Tripolyphosphate (Quality Control) Order, 2020?

The Sodium Tripolyphosphate (Quality Control) Order, 2020 was introduced to ensure that Sodium Tripolyphosphate—a widely used chemical in detergents, food processing, and water treatment—meets strict quality standards. This helps protect consumers and maintain high industry standards.

Originally, the Sodium Tripolyphosphate (Quality Control) Order, 2020 was scheduled to take effect 181 days after its publication in the Official Gazette. However, with the new amendment issued on 11th March 2025, the implementation date has been extended to 13th March 2026. 

Why the Extension?

The government has extended the timeline to allow businesses and industries enough time to comply with the new quality standards. This ensures a smooth transition, preventing any disruptions in the supply chain while maintaining the objective of enforcing quality control.

• The order applies to all goods or articles specified as Sodium Tripolyphosphate.
• However, it does not apply to Sodium Tripolyphosphate meant exclusively for export. 

Mandatory Standard Mark

Under this order, Sodium Tripolyphosphate must conform to the Indian Standard IS 6100:1984. This means that manufacturers must ensure their products meet these specific quality benchmarks.

To confirm compliance, all Sodium Tripolyphosphate products must carry the Standard Mark issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). This certification guarantees that the product meets the prescribed quality requirements. 

Who Will Monitor Compliance?

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will act as the certification and enforcement authority to ensure that Sodium Tripolyphosphate products meet the necessary standards.

Non-compliance with this order can lead to penalties under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. This ensures that quality standards are strictly followed, benefiting both consumers and industries.
