The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers (Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals) has issued an important update regarding the Polycarbonate (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2025. This amendment was officially published on 11th March 2025, and it extends the implementation date of the order. 

What is Polycarbonate (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2025?

The Polycarbonate (Quality Control) Order was introduced to ensure that Polycarbonate—a widely used material in industries such as automotive, construction, electronics, and packaging—meets strict quality standards. This regulation helps maintain product safety, durability, and overall industry standards.

Originally, the Polycarbonate (Quality Control) Order was scheduled to take effect 180 days after its publication in the Official Gazette. However, with the new amendment issued on 11th March 2025, the implementation date has been extended to 12th September 2025. 

Why the Extension?

The government has extended the timeline to allow manufacturers and industries enough time to comply with the new quality standards. This ensures a smooth transition, preventing any disruptions in production while maintaining the objective of enforcing quality control.

• The order applies to all goods or articles specified as Polycarbonate.
• However, it does not apply to Polycarbonate products meant exclusively for export. 

Mandatory Standard Mark

Under this order, Polycarbonate must conform to the Indian Standard IS 14434:1998. This means that manufacturers must ensure their products meet these specific quality benchmarks.

To confirm compliance, all Polycarbonate products must carry the Standard Mark issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). This certification guarantees that the product meets the prescribed quality requirements. 

What Happens if Someone Fails to Comply?

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will act as the certification and enforcement authority to ensure that Polycarbonate products meet the necessary standards.

Non-compliance with this order can lead to penalties under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. This ensures that quality standards are strictly followed, benefiting both consumers and industries.
