Important update regarding Indian Standard applicable to all existing Licence holders/ New applicants/ manufacturers/ importers/ product sellers for Braided Nylon Ropes for Mountaineering Purposes.
On July 3, 2024, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, through the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), introduced the Steel Wires or Strands, Nylon or Wire Ropes, and Wire Mesh (Quality Control) Order, 2024. This order mandates that Braided Nylon Ropes for Mountaineering Purposes meet stringent quality standards, ensuring better safety, reliability, and adherence to Indian standards.
Businesses involved in the manufacturing, import, or sale of Braided Nylon Ropes for Mountaineering Purposes will be directly affected by this regulation. Issued in consultation with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, this move aligns with the government's goal to enhance public safety and uphold quality standards.

1. Title and Implementation Timeline
Officially known as the Steel Wires or Strands,
Nylon or Wire Ropes, and Wire Mesh (Quality Control) Order, 2024, this
regulation comes into force following its publication in the Official Gazette.
Compliance timelines are as follows:
• Medium and
Large Enterprises must adhere to the standards starting from December 1,
2024.
• Small
Enterprises are required to comply from March 1, 2025.
• Micro Enterprises have until June 1, 2025 to meet the standards.
2. Mandatory BIS Certification
All Braided Nylon Ropes for Mountaineering Purposes must
bear the BIS Standard Mark (ISI Mark), adhering to the Indian Standard IS
6590:1972. This requires manufacturers to secure a BIS license to use the
ISI Mark, ensuring that their products meet the required quality
standards.
• This regulation applies only to products for domestic use; items manufactured solely for export are excluded from this requirement.
3. BIS as the Certifying Authority
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is assigned as the certifying and enforcing authority for this order. Their role is to monitor compliance, ensuring that only certified products bearing the BIS Standard Mark are available in the Indian market. This oversight supports consumer protection and adherence to the specified guidelines.
4. Penalties for Non-Compliance
Any breach of the Steel Wires or Strands, Nylon or Wire Ropes, and Wire Mesh (Quality Control) Order, 2024 will result in penalties under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. This enforcement is intended to maintain high-quality standards and deter non-compliance in the industry.

Implementation Dates: Date of implementation for Medium & Large Enterprises: 1st December 2024
