The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade) has issued a Quality Control order for Furniture - General Purpose Chairs and Stools. 

1. Short Title and Commencement:

 This order is called the Furniture (Quality Control) Order, 2023.

  It will take effect twelve months after the date of its publication. 

2. Compulsory Use of Standard Mark:

·    All specified furniture items, such as Furniture – Storage Units, must meet the Indian Standard IS 17634:2022.

·   These items must also have the Standard Mark and be licensed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under Scheme-I of Schedule-II to the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. 

Exceptions:

·    The order does not apply to goods or articles manufactured for export.

·   Micro and small enterprises, as defined by the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, are exempt until eighteen months after the notification's publication.

·   Enterprises registered under the "Udyam Portal" of the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, with investment in plant and machinery or equipment not exceeding twenty-five lakh rupees and a turnover not exceeding two crore rupees for the previous financial year, are also exempt. 

3. Certification and Enforcement Authority:

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will be responsible for certifying and enforcing this order for the specified furniture items.

4. Penalty for Contravention:

Anyone who violates the provisions of this order will be subject to penalties under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
